There Was a Forest, Jewish Life in eastern Europe today
Project Summary: 'There Was a Forest' travels from personal biography to subjective documentary. With roots in my own family history touched by the Holocaust, the photographic essay was created in Poland and Ukraine 2005-2010, depicting Jewish life in eastern Europe today.
The palladium works shows little stories, comprised of 1, 2-3 frames, mimicking stills and motion and a closer look at people beyond a single portrait. The print sizes are similar to snap shots taken in the 1940s, referring back to a timeless look at people and culture. The color works add a realistic dimension to the story, and show the actual hues of the locations photographed. The two bodies of work inform one another to provide a full view of this social documentary.
